Roadtrip 2015 Fall: Vancouver - Astoria - Bandon - Anderson - Paso Robles - Palm Desert - Morongo Valley - Sedona - Henderson - Lone Pine - Sacramento - Ashland - Newport - Astoria - Vancouver

Day 12 - Wonder Valley and other concerns

This is the view from our living room. It is very hard to leave this.

We drag ourselves away from our digs for another afternoon of adventuring. We roll through the town of 29 Palms. Except they lied - all told, there are way more than 29 Palms in this town.

This is really boring - they're looking for something called Jack Rabbit Homesteads.

Always a welcome sight in the desert - he even stopped to ask if we were OK - nice guy.

First stop in Wonder Valley - The Barnet's. These little jewels are "Jackrabbit Homesteads" (I wouldn't make that up). In 1938, one could get five acres of land in the heck-hole of Wonder Valley in exchange for making "improvements". I suppose this is an "improvement".

Nuthin' better than a picture window wall.

Whoever owned this one had a serious something going on with mirrors.

This little Jack Rabbit is pretty lonely these days.

This water tower has spent a little too much time in the blazing desert heat - it can no longer hold containment.

Further up the Wonder, we find a contrast in tortoises, past and present.

Jack Rabbits are so small - can you imagine living in such a space - come to think of it, in Vancouver we may be adopting living conditions much like this. Thank you very much Gregor.

The model home. The chair is extra.

Many Jackrabbits have had haphazard extensions added over the years. This one features a really cool meth-lab.

Backing off to a safe distance, we realize our day in the Wonder Valley is coming to a close.

Passing back through the little ville of 29 Palms, we notice the busiest business in town.

The Minnie Winnie couldn't get a spot at Joshua Tree - it is the weekend after all - so this lovely large space at the Vons lot in Yucca Valley will have to do for today's sunset sonata.

The Fighting Sunset Lion of 29 Palms Marines makes its daily appearance.
